ABOUT THE MUSEUM
As one of Portugal’s foremost museums, MAC/CCB — Museum of Contemporary Art and Architecture Centre at the Belém Cultural Centre is dedicated to the study and presentation of modern and contemporary art, with a particular focus on interdisciplinary practices and emerging architectural approaches. A must-visit destination in Lisbon, it regularly features in The Art Newspaper’s ranking of the world’s 100 most visited museums.
It holds a significant number of works by major Portuguese and international artists—including Alexander Calder, Almada Negreiros, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, Amedeo Modigliani, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Doris Salcedo, Francis Bacon, Helena Almeida, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Joan Miró, Louise Bourgeois, Lourdes Castro, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Nan Goldin, Niki de Saint Phalle, Pablo Picasso, Paula Rego, Piet Mondrian, René Magritte, Richard Serra, Salvador Dalí and Wifredo Lam, among many others—drawn from the Berardo Collection, the Teixeira de Freitas Collection, the Ellipse Collection – Portuguese State Contemporary Art Collection to the Museum of Contemporary art/Belém Cultural Centre.
With a history spanning nearly 30 years of exhibition and museum activity, first as the Exhibition Centre (1993–2005) and later as the Museu Coleção Berardo (2006–2022), it was inaugurated in 2023 as MAC/CCB — Museum of Contemporary Art and Architecture Centre. Located in one of Lisbon’s most emblematic heritage districts, the museum also contributes to the Belém Cultural Centre’s mission of fostering dialogue between the performing arts, architecture, and the visual arts.
