Dois indianos. Uma fotógrafa, Romila, e um historiador, Anand, vão descobrir as histórias dos soldados do seu país que morreram na Papua durante a II Guerra Mundial, lutando ao lado dos australianos e dos ingleses. Um deles, o avô de Romila. O seu guia vai ser Papa Buka, um velho sábio, que lhe dá a conhecer a dança, a música, as tribos, a sua biodiversidade, a herança cultural e sobretudo o seu sofrimento numa guerra que não era deles. Este filme é o candidato aos Óscares pela Papua Nova Guiné, realizado em co-produção com a Índia e da responsabilidade de um dos mais prestigiados realizadores indianos, cuja obra já foi premiada em múltiplos festivais, incluindo o Fantasporto. O realizador foi três vezes vencedor do Prémio Nacional de Cinema da Índia e foi selecionador para os Óscares em 2015. Apresentou o seu primeiro filme, “Saira” em 2007 no Festival de Cannes. Seguiram-se outros filmes que receberam inúmeros galardões por todo o mundo, nomeadamente no Festival de Shanghai, Cannes, Moscovo, Chicago, Tallin e também no Fantasporto com “Painting Life” (2018) que foi Prémio da Crítica. Com 23 prémios internacionais, é, entre outros, conhecido também por “Birds with Large Wings” (2015), “Sound of Silence” (2017), este vencedor do Festival de Cincinatti, e “Trees Under the Sun” (2019), premiado como Melhor Filme em Toulouse. O seu filme “Invisible Windows” (2022), apresentado já no Fantasporto, precedeu este “Papa Buka” (2025).
Two Indians. A photographer, Romila, and a historian, Anand, set out to discover the stories of soldiers from their country who died in Papua during World War II, fighting alongside the Australians and the British. One of them is Romila's grandfather. Their guide is Papa Buka, a wise old man who introduces them to the dance, music, tribes, biodiversity, cultural heritage and, above all, the suffering of a war that was not theirs.
This film is Papua New Guinea's Oscar nominee, co-produced with India and directed by one of India's most prestigious filmmakers, whose work has won awards at multiple festivals, including Fantasporto. Three times winner of the National Indian Film Award, member of the Oscar selection committee in 2015, his first film was “” (2007), screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Other features followed and earning over 20 awards all over the world in numerous festivals such as Shanghai, Cannes, Moscovo, Chicago or Tallin. In Fantasporto with “ Life” (2018), he was granted the Critics Award. He is also known for “ with Large Wings” (2015), “ of Silence” (2017), winner of the Cincinatti Film Festival, and “ Under the Sun” (2019), awarded as Best Film in Toulouse. “ Windows” (2022), screened in Fantasporto, preceeded this “ Buka” (2025).
