País Basco, século XVII. Em plena caça às bruxas, durante a Inquisição, Kattalin foge do marido abusivo e perde-se na floresta durante a noite. Ao encontrar três mulheres idosas junto ao rio, fica presa às suas histórias de bruxaria, segredos e desejos proibidos, até perceber que também ela começa a fazer parte daquela teia de lendas. À medida que os relatos se cruzam, revelam uma comunidade dominada pela repressão religiosa, pela violência de género e pelo medo de tudo o que escapa à ordem estabelecida. Realizado por Paul Urkijo Alijo, “Gaua” é um folk horror basco de época com uma atmosfera sombria e feérica, onde a bruxaria, um amor proibido e libertação sexual se misturam com a história e mitologia bascas. Terceira longa do realizador, que mantém a tradição de filmar em euskara, depois de “Errementari” e “Irati”, vencedor do Prémio do Público no MOTELX 2023.
Basque Country, 17th century. In the midst of a witch hunt during the Inquisition, Kattalin flees her abusive husband and becomes lost in the forest at night. When she encounters three elderly women by the river, she becomes entangled in their tales of witchcraft, secrets and forbidden desires, until she realizes that she too is becoming part of this web of legends. As their stories intertwine, they reveal a community dominated by religious repression, gender-based violence and fear of everything that falls outside the established order. Directed by Paul Urkijo Alijo, “Gaua” is a period Basque folk horror with a dark, dreamlike atmosphere, where witchcraft, forbidden love and sexual liberation intertwine with Basque history and mythology. The director’s third feature, which continues the tradition of filming in euskara, following “Errementari” and “Irati”, which won the Audience Award at MOTELX 2023.
