Three sisters take refuge in the family’s holiday home after the youngest survives a second suicide attempt. When they discover that their abusive mother has died, the two older sisters decide to hide the news from her in an attempt to protect her from yet another trauma. But the secrets begin to pile up, and when a mysterious man unexpectedly appears, the fragile relationship between the three women turns into an experience of brutal cruelty and terror. Directed by Patrik Syversen, “Dawning” blends family drama and psychological thriller in an austere and patient film, where silence, guilt and failures in communication are as unsettling as the intruder himself.
