Denver Blake é um activista ambiental determinado a expor os segredos de uma indústria cosmética que lucra com as inseguranças e os complexos que ela própria ajuda a criar, sobretudo, nas mulheres. A investigação leva-o até Renée (Joana Ribeiro), uma bailarina que se submete compulsivamente a cirurgias e tratamentos para ter o corpo perfeito. Fascinado por ela, Denver segue-a até um submundo clandestino de operações plásticas, onde cirurgiões sem escrúpulos prometem tornar possível qualquer ideal de beleza. Realizado por Carlos Conceição (“Um Fio de Baba Escarlate”, “Nação Valente”), este body horror noir cronenbergiano não foge do habitual tom irónico do cineasta português, satirizando a mercantilização capitalista do corpo e a beleza como violência. Com McCaul Lombardi, Joana Ribeiro e Alba Baptista, teve estreia mundial no Festival de Edimburgo.
Denver Blake is an environmental activist determined to expose the secrets of a cosmetics industry that profits from the insecurities and complexes it helps create, particularly among women. His investigation leads him to Renée (Joana Ribeiro), a ballerina who compulsively undergoes surgeries and treatments in pursuit of the perfect body. Fascinated by her, Denver follows her into an underground world of plastic surgery, where unscrupulous surgeons promise to make any ideal of beauty possible. Directed by Carlos Conceição (“Name above Title”, “Tommy Guns”), this noirish Cronenbergian body horror retains the Portuguese filmmaker’s trademark ironic tone, satirising the capitalist commercialisation of the body and beauty as a form of violence. Starring McCaul Lombardi, Joana Ribeiro and Alba Baptista, it premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
